| Slow & Steady - avoid the transformation mistakes |
May 7th 2007 |
Business Transformation takes time, planning and an understanding of where others have failed. In this article by leading change author, John Kotter, eight errors of business transformation efforts. Over the years, there have been many such articles with a positive being that the themes amongst them seem relatively consistent. While this article does not discuss "process" specifically it is clear that any BPM Professional would see the change process as the foundation for any process effort they undertake. Kotter reflects on change as a process and explains that there are a number of distinct phases which must be followed - a change methodology? Being the optimist that I am I prefer to reverse the eight errors into what change would look like it were successful - so here are the eight things that should be part of your change process:- Establish a sense of urgency
- Create a Coalition
- Develop a Vision.
- (Over-)Communicate the Vision
- Remove Obstacles
- Create Short-term Wins
- Declare Victory Cautiously - when the Culture has shifted
- Anchor Changes in Culture
Sustained business transformation takes years and is as much (probably more) about the culture than it is any business goals or project tasks. Effective process management requires highly skilled change professionals that last the journey and understand people as much as they do process. Read more in the April 2007 Volume 8 edition of AFR Boss magazine - HBR article: "Slow & Steady" by John P. Kotter (pp.23-26).
