Systems Thinking - Enterprise Architecture March 12th 2007

Something for those on both sides of the Business and IT divide in February's CIO magazine.

"Imagine trying to train a horse to run faster by teaching each of its legs to perform more efficiently." This quote from Mike Balle's book Systems Thinking , introduces a refreshing article from Sue Bushell in February's CIO magazine titled "Taking a Systems View" The article takes a business perspective on the topic emphasising the need to understand the context of any intervention (ie. Process improvement) in relation to the other parts of the organisation. This to me is the key failing of many process improvement initiatives and remains one of the key challenges of any BPM Professional - to provide the systems-view without overcomplicating the task at hand.

Also in this edition is an article on the stages of successful Enterprise Architecture by Galen Gruman - "The Four Stages of Enterprise Architecture" It tracks the evolution of IT architecture based on an MIT survey and guides us on moving from "Business Silos" (stage-1) to "Business Modularity (stage-4) requiring that we develop "Standardized Technology" (stage-2) and "Standardised Processes" (stage-3) along the way. Throughout the article IT is put into context of both the wider business as well as processes along with some reference to architecture development maturity.
