A school's perspective: Managing process in schools and classrooms

Michael N King (Quality Learning Australia)
Director, BE (Hons), MBA, Grad Dip Science (Statistics)

Profile
Michael spent the first decade of his work life as an electrical engineer in the Telecom Australia (now Telstra) Network Management Unit. It was later in the Corporate Quality Management Branch that Michael developed a passion for the principles and practices of continuous quality improvement.

Michael left Telstra in early 1995 to join the Australian Quality Council (AQC). In 1996, Michael was instrumental in establishing the AQC Quality in Schools initiative in Victoria. Michael personally led the team that saw the initiative grow to include over 150 Victorian schools and over 200 schools and preschools in South Australia.

In September 2002 Michael relocated to Canberra and established Quality Learning Australia (QLA) and focus on improving the quality of learning in Australian schools.

View on BPM
Business Process Management is, for me, the systems and structures used by an organisation to ensure clear understanding, accountability, responsibilities, measurement and ongoing improvement of all key organisational processes.

Presentation
This presentation will highlight the many and varied processes in operation in every school and classroom. Examples will be provided of schools and teachers who seek to actively manage and improve their school and classroom processes. The presentation will illustrate that junior primary school students, given appropriate instruction and tools, can be quick to understand the importance of processes and process management in achieving their learning and life goals.

Key Takeaways
  • Schools are highly complex organisations with a myriad of processes.
  • Young children can understand and apply process management.
  • There is an opportunity to expand the application of Process Management concepts and practices across schools.
The Biggest Issue in BPM today
The biggest issue in BPM today is the wide-spread lack of process thinking.
