| Ark Group BPM Conference - Summary |
November 17th 2008 |
Last month's Ark Group BPM Conference held in Melbourne was a highly interactive and enjoyable learning event. As chair of the event, I was proud to be able to introduce such a high calibre of speakers from operations staff to through to C-level executives. The feedback from participants was very high and I can say that from my perspective that this was one of the most forward-thinking and learned set of practitioner experiences on show.
After profiling a number of the speakers in these News and Events updates leading up to the conference, I wondered what the best way to summarise the key themes from the conference. Rather than provide reviews of particular presentations, I thought it best to simply list some of the key learning's and reminders that I took from the event. Here is a list of quotes and notes I took from the presentations and workshops over the two days:- There is no one right method or tool
- The difference and relationship between Six Sigma (Process Improvement) and BPM
- The importance of Business / IT Alignment
- Process Governance
- There is a wealth of tools and methods
- Process first, then IT
- People then Process
- Importance and role of the BPM Centre of Excellence (CoE)
- The value and benefit of measuring the "as-is"
- Mapping the "as-is" or the "to-be" first?
- Map the Customer-centric Process view
- BPM Notation - benefits and issues
- Compliance as a driver and enabler of BPM
- Taking a step back - Business Models and Interoperability Frameworks
- Various perspectives on BPM Maturity
- Language / Communication / Tribal Behaviour
- Use of process reference models
- Process Models in action - embedding Knowledge Management
- Enterprise change starts with yourself!
- BPM requires a paradigm shift and the transformed enterprise may best be managed by others
- The high cost of 'dis-engaged employees' and the power of 'positive enquiry'
- The state of BPM in Australia
It was a pleasure to meet all of the attendees and presenters and I look forward to meeting many of them again at next year's conference!
